Intensive IELTS

 

Course Outline

 

This program is designed to provide students who are intending to sit for the IELTS examination with a demanding program of study. The program equips students with the strategies they need to realise their full potential and attain their desired IELTS score. The program covers both the General Training module and the Academic module.

 

Teachers work closely with the students and focus lessons on examination preparation techniques, exam strategies and language development in order to develop the skills and abilities students will need to attain their desired score in each skill on the IELTS test.

Levels

 

Intensive IELTS has three levels1.

Entry requirements

 

The basic requirement is an intermediate level of English. You need to provide evidence that shows you can achieve a 5.0 score in the Academic Module of the IELTS or the equivalent score in TOEIC/TOEFL or a PTE Academic Score of 36 to 41 on the Pearson Test of English. You can also enter directly if you get a high enough score on Castle College’s placement test. You could also study Intensive English until your English is acceptable for entry to the Intensive IELTS course.

Introduce topic: Brands – identify popular brands and brand loyalty

Students make their Pitch from yesterday & decide on most persuasive pitch
Introduce new topic: marketing pop music
Discuss – famous pop groups and the formation of famous pop groups

Review: Homework from workbook
Introduce new topic: communication/animal communication
Reading activity: skimming and scanning (locating information)

Task review: summary completion
Listening exercise: summary completions
Grammar adverbial clauses

Review of workbook exercises
Revision Units 1-4

Listening skills: Review listening strategies for IELTS - Multiple choice questions and matching questions
Vocabulary building
Pronunciation: stressed verbs
Task: Brian storm a new clothing line you want to launch/pitch to the class

Review reading strategies for IELTS – Yes/no/not given
Students read “Hearts for sale” + related questions
Review exercise
Grammar – cleft sentences

Vocabulary exercise: language terms
Speaking test Part 3 exercise: discussion on communication

Pronunciation: vowel sounds
Writing folder 2: Academic Writing task 1: Commenting on graphs

Introduction of topic: media
Exercise on vocabulary related to the media
Discussion on the suitability of vocabulary for particular contexts
